Tasmania Wants A Team And Melbourne Needs A Transfusion – Why Not A Joint Venture Deal ? I’m hoping for a Tasmanian / Melbourne Joint Venture Club, based in Melbourne which brings together a fledgling Tassy Club consortium and the MFC in a 50/50 deal for a fixed period of say 10 years. By the end of the 5th year, the Tassy consortium has to have clubrooms and training facilities in place for a stand alone team, and from year 6 to 10 the joint club to use both facilities equally.
As for home games, both sides of the deal get to host 5 or 6 home games each for the full 10 years.
The AFL comes on board with half the assistance to that given Suns and GWS in the first 3 years, then repeats that assistance after the 10th year when Tassy becomes a stand alone club and MFC resumes its stand alone status.
The advantages I see are
1. It injects 50% new blood into the boardroom and management
2. It gives the club(s) direction, focus and time-frames to work to
3. It gives Tassy an AFL apprenticeship of 10 years with a half price entry cost
4. It gives MFC 10 years to learn from others and get their act together.
5. It gives the Tasmanians a team and in 10 years the AFL #19th club
The proposal solves a lot of problems and a lot of issues.
Why not ?
Hawthorn might get a bit dark but then they probably don’t need their deal any more..
Actually one of the big problems is if you based the team in the South, the Northerners would complain and vice versa. Having the population (roughly the size of Geelong or the ACT) split between a town of less than 200k in the south and three much smaller towns in the north adds a genuine logistical difficulty.
I maintain that Tassie just doesn’t have the population or the wealth to support a team. The State’s economy always has been a basket case, even after the improvements of the Bacon years. I’m not convinced that a 10 year joint venture would end up with a club in Tassie. Additionally Melbourne has, what, 40,000 members in Victoria – could they get that in Tassie eventually? I doubt it very much
Sorry to poo poo the idea but I’ve never been convinced Tassie could support a club more than a few token games a year
