Avoiding Mistakes In Search Engine Optimization

Who hasn't made a mistake in their life? Whether it was wearing two different socks to work or forgetting your keys in the car, we've all done it. What sets the smart apart from the weak is learning from each mistake that we make. The list below allows you to learn from the mistakes of others without making them yourself first – how awesome is that?

Let's be frank: there is not a single popular search engine which can read the content of your images. While it can find a similar picture, it can't understand the text in a graphic. You can use the Alt tag on an image to let the search engine spider know what the graphic contains, but you are missing out on an important opportunity. Content which is actually available to be read on your site will have greater weight with a search engine than content contained in Alt tags. Don't use graphics for headers and be sure that your infographics contain as little text as possible. Use them to graphically depict the content of your copy, instead of taking over for the whole article itself.

Remember that reputation is king when it comes to SEO. You want sites with a great reputation and plenty of page rank to link back to your site, for example. They pass some of that good standing to your pages, and you can benefit from it. The same goes for content you create – if people trust what you write, they will follow your call to action. Google will reciprocate your with a boost in page rank, and that can never hurt!

Before you go gung ho on your SEO, do some keyword brainstorming. Want to do this in a simple way to start? Start typing in a keyword and check out what Google provides as autocomplete suggestions! Next, do the same on Soovle which amalgamates results from seven of the top websites online. Sometimes you will find ideas which you may not have thought of on your own. For example, if you sell jewelry, you may find out that “jewelry” leads you to “jewelry cleaning”, “jewelry storage” and “jewelry trends”, all great ideas for blog posts or other products you can carry on your website.

Whenever you engage in unnatural behavior, it will stick out to Google like a sore thumb. If you suddenly have thousands of back links to your website, the search engines will have algorithms in place to notice. On top of that, they know which sites are questionable and any links back to your site from those URLs will stand to hurt your ranking. Take your time and think over quantity.

I hate to make a mistake. Thanks to lists just like this one, I don't have to! Instead, you and I can learn what others have done wrong and how to avoid the same pitfalls ourselves. As long as you take the advice in this article to heart, you should be able to make the right decisions going forward.
