How Can I Get Email Accounts And Send Marketing Messages Legally? Hi everyone. Is It Normal For A Model Scout To Have The Model Sign A Contract? I was scouted and asked to email some pictures. A few days later she called me and said that she submitted me to LA models and that they want to set up an interview. She wants me to sign a contract stating that i give her permission to represent me as my mother agency , I am not to go to agencies without her knowledge for 3 months. she also asks for me to pay a $500 dollar placement fee after i am signed with an agency out of my first jobs for all the work she did with me to get me there. is this normal or does this sound like a scam?
It’s not a scam but I wouldn’t do it unless you want to be a model more than anything, you’ve exhausted all other options on your own and still have not been able to get an agent. If your main goal in life is to be a model and you’ve submitted photos to 50 agencies and gone to open calls and entered model searches and still have not got an agent, then it might be time to consider a scout. But if you have never even been to open calls at agencies on your own, have not submitted photos, etc then I wouldn’t pay a scout or sign any sort of contract
YOU should not ever pay a placement fee to a scout – the agency should pay the scout, not the model. These scouts are usually paid a $5000-10,000 finders fee by the agency for every model they bring into an agency so there is no reason for you to pay a placement fee
I would also never agree not to contact agencies without her knowledge. Right now you are not signed to LA Models so there is no reason why you can’t contact other agencies on your own to try and find representation as nothing is a guarantee. LA Models has not even seen you yet
Also would never sign a mother agency contract with a scout. I would only sign that with an agency after they have proven they are getting you work. A mother agency contract gives that person or agency 10-15% of everything you earn for the rest of your career even if she has nothing to do with it. If you moved to Miami, got an agency on your own, and started booking jobs, you would still legally have to give 10-15% to this mother agent. That’s IN ADDITION to the 15-20% commission that LA Models or any other agency you sign will always take. That means of everything you make, you are going to be giving away up to 35% to your agent and the mother agent. Then you take off 40% taxes and you are left with 1/4 of your fee. So that $1000 catalog shoot only nets you $250
A mother agency contract is ONLY good if it’s with an actual agency that books you on jobs, then after a year or two starts sending you to other cities. For example, Kate Moss’ mother agency is Storm because that’s the agency where she started and she started getting magazine covers, runway shows, etc. Then after she became known in the UK, her agency started sending her to Paris, NY, etc for work. So of course Storm should get a mother agency commission as they made her into a supermodel and they booked her on jobs in other countries. Or if you lived in a secondary market like Denver where there is not much work and you got signed to a Denver agency, they booked you on local jobs, then started sending you to LA or NY or Tokyo for more work – then again they should get a mother agency commission as these jobs all were booked through your agency. A scout doesn’t do this. A scout’s job is done once they get you signed to an agency, then they just collect money from all of your jobs without doing anything else
You don’t need to pay her anything or sign anything. LA Models holds open calls every Monday – Wednesday from 3-4 where you or anyone else can go directly to the agency, be seen by an agent, and get signed to the agency on their own. http://lamodels.com/ You don’t need a scout or mother agent to do this for you. Or if you don’t live in LA then you can submit photos on your own. A scout can’t get you an agent – they are not doing anything you can’t do yourself. If an agency likes your look, they don’t care if you submitted on your own or came through a scout. In fact, they prefer you came on your own so they don’t have to pay a scouting fee to the scout
I would tell the scout that you are sorry but you are not sure you want to even be a model and you need time to think about it. Also say that your parents/boyfriend/whoever are against it and you don’t want to do anything that would upset them. Or you can say that you had already sent in your pictures to LA Models and about 10 other agencies before she scouted you so you are just waiting for them to respond
Then either go to an open call at LA Models or submit your photos directly and see what happens. If they are not interested then they won’t be interested because a scout submitted you. And if they are interested, then they will sign you without having to pay a $500 placement fee or giving away 15% of your money to this person.
