I Am Concerned About My Friend? This will be long, but please read all the way through if you have time.

I have a friend who, I feel, has been too dependent on me in the past. Last year, he asked me every single day for help with his math homework. I tried to refuse him, because when I did help him, I would sacrifice hours every time just for his math homework, but he persisted. My parents also grew extremely tired of him. Once my dad told me, “For the love of God, will you please tell that boy to shut up and do his own homework?” He also seemed to cling to me everywhere I went, because nobody else in our grade would put up with him. In addition, he seemed to have a romantic interest in me. I don’t, unfortunately. However, he simply didn’t take the hint. I guess I’m afraid to confront him because he has anger issues and gets angry REALLY easily. I, unfortunately, am mildly angrophobic and will do a lot to avoid a conflict or confrontation.

Now, this year, our classes are a lot tougher. He is now taking an advanced math class with me. However, at the start of the year, he immediately started failing without my help. He has been cussing under his breath and pounding his fists on the table every time he gets a grade under 85%, because he is so used to acing his other classes without studying. A teacher talked to him and he revealed that he was skipped through a prerequisite class. He also mentioned that he had “worked with me” in the past. The teachers asked me about it and said that they would slowly move him away from my seat in class to help him become less dependent on me. I agreed.

Now that he can’t sit next to me in class and ask me for help, he has started pestering me during our study hall time to help him with his homework in school and outside of school. I pointed him towards a math tutoring lab in the school library, but he says “tutoring is for sissies.” I also talked to him the other day and he told me, “I refuse to go back and take the prerequisite class because only the INFERIOR people take basic classes. Those classes are for PEASANTS.” I have tried pointing him toward many resources, including the internet, tutoring, teachers, videos, etc. However, he continually continues asking me to help him, saying, “I have math homework due tomorrow in my class. I need you to help me with my homework problems.” When I ask him why he doesn’t use the other resources that can give all the time he might need to him, he says, “Well, I don’t really have the discipline to click on those links you sent me in that email. I’ll just get distracted.”

He also tries to appear “cool” to me, even though our school is so small, it doesn’t have much of a “popularity hierarchy” or anything like that…haha. Once he even asked me, “Are you going to see the premiere tonight? I’m definitely going. Half the school is gonna be there.” I said no. He said, “Well, that’s where everybody’s going.” Two minutes later, he pulled out his cell phone while still sitting next to me and called his dad. I heard him say, “Hey dad, can I go to that premiere? It’s tonight,” while still sitting right next to me. He constantly makes references to “where everybody goes,” “the cool people,” and “everybody who’s anybody.”

    So I have some questions:
1.) How would I politely but firmly tell him to back off, because I also have homework too?
2.) The teacher wanted me to let her know if there were any problems with this guy. Should I tell her what he told me about why he won’t go take that prerequisite class?
3.)Why won’t he leave me alone?!?! He called me 5 times and texted me 27 times within a half hour once, asking me to ask my dad to give him a ride home from across the city after dinner!

Thank you so much if you have read this far. This has been bugging me for a long time. I appreciate any advice, because this guy is just so clingy and annoying, and nobody wants to talk to me when he’s around me.

Chemical engineering can be competitive as it’s gained popularity in recent years. In 2012, 2851 students applied, and 2201 were accepted.

The number of girls studying chemical engineering is much higher than other engineering subjects with 27% of students starting university last year being female.

You’ll need good grades to get on a course though. Bath accept AAA at A-level, UCL want A*AA – AAB depending on the course, and Newcastle want AAB-ABB.

For a full list of universities and their chemical engineering entry requirements please visit http://www.whynotchemeng.com/wnce_universities/uk%20and%20ireland.aspx#.UjMtEtKKKxI and click the link at the bottom of the page.

      I hope this helps.

Where To Promote Photography Images? Hey i have been studying photography for over a year and people think im quite good at it, so i have a flickr account and i added photos to groups, i was wondering where to promote my pictures to? Where they may actually be noticed. My flickr is http://www.flickr.com/photos/joejonesphotography/

You are quite good at it. In fact I’d say some of your macro insect shots are excellent. The other pictures are decent to quite good, but they don’t match up to the insects.

The problem lies in the subject matter. You’re taking pictures of the same subjects as literally millions of other people. Sunsets, insects, long exposures of traffic. These are nice to shoot, but hard to make stand out unless they are absolutely phenomenal. And you’re not there yet, however well you’re doing. If it’s only been a year since you’ve been studying then your stuff is impressive, but a year’s nothing in the long run.

This is going slightly off the topic, but it’s something that gets talked about a lot on here and in other photographic circles. Flickr boasts of having thousands of uploads per hour (or even per minute, quite possibly). God alone knows how many shots are upped to Facebook in a similar time span. Consequently, there are billions of photographs out there. A great many of them are worthless (and more than a few should be candidates for crimes against art), but they’re still there, and they make it harder for good photos to be seen.

I would turn your attention to trying to find something different to shoot. That alone should make a difference. You seem to have a talent for macro, so maybe you should look into specialising in that. That would set you apart a bit, and you can take pleasure in becoming very good at something, rather than shooting this and that.

In terms of promotion, try setting up something like a Zenfolio or Smugmug site. Zenfolio is a professional looking site with everything Flickr has, plus a good blog function and the ability to offer prints for sale.

What I used to do when I had a flickr account is that whenever I uploaded a new picture, I would include a link to my Zenfolio site. That got some people to visit. I do the same thing on Facebook, Twitter and Google +, and I get a steady, if not spectacular, stream of visitors over time.

Have a look at setting up your own personal site with one of those sites. Flickr is a popularity contest for the most part, where the quality of the photo often counts for little.

Good luck, you have a lot of promise.
