Which Family Cars Are Reliable AND Fun To Drive? Hi
Long story short, I got a used 5 year old bmw 335i a few months back. Its a great car, drives like a dream but keeps giving me niggles. First it was rear brakes, then coolant, then rear brakes, then a grinding sound from the steering column that dealers are unable to diagnose (which searching, I found many brand new 3 series and 5 series owners seem to report)… I love the way the car drives but somehow when planning a long trip with family, it doesn’t inspire confidence. I am always afraid some warning alert will come up on the dash any moment. It’s not about spending time or money on maintenance but no one (tried dealers and Indy shops) is able to do a “full checkup” and tell if the car is good to keep going or not. All they can say is “no problem that we can see” but then something keeps coming up.
Anyway long story short, this weekend I planned a nice 3-night trip to the middle of nowhere with family, was apprehensive to take the car or not. Well I thought, it’s not that old, got about 50k miles on it, but somehow in the back of my mind I was driving dreading the dash warnings. Then halfway into the drive the inevitable happened! A red car lift sign with red BRAKE sign came up and that’s it! I decided these cars are for people who can afford them BRAND NEW, not for an average joe like me with a 20k budget looking for some fun 🙁
What’s the use of “driving pleasure” if you don’t DARE take your family on a long drive in these cars?!
Anyway.. So now I plan to replace this with something more reliable. Maybe the artificial feel of electric steering will annoy me after that “perfect” bmw feel, maybe I’ll miss the 300 horses and twin turbo mountain of torque but hey, when my uncle two states away says “come over” I don’t have to think twice!
So what’s your suggestion for a new rock-solid reliable car, not just when it’s new but as it gets older? My mind keeps saying Accord (never heard of a broken down one) but is the Mazda6 good? How about the Fusion and other Fords? Are they reliable now or is it all marketing? What about VWs?
I’m looking for something in the 20-22k range, rock-solid-reliable, with four doors but hopefully fun to drive as well. Something that you can service every 6months or a year, fill gas and keep driving. And not think about anything else related to the mechanics of the car. And hopefully something I can look forward to tossing around curvy hill roads once in a while. Does such a car exist? Or is that a rich mans thing now? 🙁
What’s your opinion? What should I get?
Oh and I should’ve mentioned I’m looking for an auto transmission, that’s why no Civic Si / mazdaspeed3..
Accord v6 unfortunately is 32k, not 22k 🙁
Well unfortunately there is a very slim market for something new that’s fun to drive in that price range. VW people either love them or hate them. The way I figure if about 20k is what you have to work with stay away from any euro car they cost so much more to repair even VWs. In fact you would probably spend less on maintenance for a Cadillac than a VW. I would suggest looking at something that is used but maybe 1 year old with a warranty and certified by the manufacturer you would be able to get a lot more car that way for the money. I here the accords are very good, the only one I would say comes close to being fun to drive is the v6 model I’ve driven the 4 cylinder model and while it can get you where your going it isn’t going to carve canyons and it just doesn’t have a nice engine sound, typical 4 cylinder, I don’t know much about the Mazdas except they aren’t as popular as Honda, Toyota, or any American auto maker.
