MGMT Essay Questions? 1. You are the Vice-President for International Development of a small U.S. pharmaceutical company (located in Emeryville, California) which specializes in the development of new medical vaccines using unique biotechnological know-how. Until now, the company has only achieved small successes in limited markets. Recently, however, the company developed a vaccine to protect humans against the MERS virus. According to the World Health Organization, this virus has already been identified in Europe and the Arabian peninsula, two areas where the need for a vaccine is urgent and immediate. The virus is not yet a major problem in South America, North America or Asia. The company has limited manufacturing capability; if the MERS virus reaches epidemic proportions in Europe and the Arabian peninsula, it will not have the capability to supply large enough quantities to meet demand. The company wants to determine the best way it should supply the markets where the virus is currently a problem and which entry mode or modes it should use. The possibilities are:
    a) Manufacture the product at home and export to the European markets and the Arabian peninsula b) License the formula out to a company already established in each of these two regions c) Enter into a strategic alliance with a large pharmaceutical company and establish a 50/50 joint venture company which would manufacture and market the product in these two regions) d) Establish wholly owned subsidiaries in the afflicted areas e) another alternative you might identify. As the Vice-President, you must make some strategic decisions:
    a) Which entry mode or modes (entry strategy/strategies) would you follow in Europe and the Arabian peninsula?
    b) Why would you choose this strategy or strategies instead of the other alternatives? Explain what the advantages are of the entry more or modes you are recommending and what the disadvantages of the other modes are.
    c) What entry mode would you use in those regions where MERS is not yet a major threat and demand is not as urgent (South America, North America, Asia)? Why would you recommend this entry mode or modes?

    2. You are the CEO of a chemical company that produces sulfuric acid, an acid that is used as an input in a wide variety of industrial products. The company has a good reputation in the U.S. and has started venturing out successfully into the international market by exporting to Asia and South America. The product is a commodity so there is intense competition on price. The product has a low value to weight ratio and trade barriers are moderate but there is an expectation that they will increase. A manufacturing plant costs about $20 million to build and requires a moderately skilled workforce. Your current plant can supply the U.S. market and some volume of export business but will need to be enlarged or supplemented by additional plant or plants in order to keep up with demand. The total value of the world market is expected to reach $20-30 billion. As the CEO, you must make some decisions:
    a) Based on the above, which of the four basic strategies in international business do you think your company should pursue? Why would you make this choice to organize and align your company to this particular strategy?
    b) Should your company follow a plan of concentrated manufacturing or decentralized manufacturing? Explain why.
    c) What types of factors would you look for when you are deciding on a location or locations for the company’s plant or plants?

Knee Problems, What Is This!? Around 6 months ago, I slammed forward on my bent knee, impacting the joint and my shin onto a hard wood floor. At the time I heard (and felt) an alarming pop. But I didn’t feel any immediate pain.
The following day my knee felt tender and mildly uncomfortable; but not enough to stop me from my normal day-to-day activities.
For about 5 months I had this slight persistent pain in my knee, which felt worse if I bent it sharply or climbed the stairs.

For the last three weeks it has suddenly become agonizing. I think I must have turned the injured knee at the wrong angle because suddenly this bolt of pain shot through my leg and I could -NOT- put any weight on it.

My suspicion is that I tore the cartilage before Christmas and somehow reopened the wound a few weeks ago.
I have seen one nurse in the ER and two Doctors who have all agreed that it’s probably a torn cartilage.
The nurse thought I needed an MRI scan and to see an orthopedic surgeon.
The first Doctor told me to go home, keep it elevated and take painkillers / anti-inflammatories. Then she told me i’d be on the waiting list for physio (6 weeks)
The last Doctor wants me to have an x-ray and apparently put me on a 12 week waiting list to see orthopedic surgeon.

I have been using crutches to hobble around my house for the past three weeks (forget venturing out, my last trip ‘out’ involved hobbling to the car, hobbling into the Doctor’s for a second examination and hobbling back to the car)
The pain killers don’t even touch it, I’ve used up most of my holiday leave to keep from losing my job because I have nothing positive or definite to report to my employer.
And alarmingly, the movement I did have is deteriorating. I could bend my knee to about 70 degrees when it was first examined, in the space of two weeks that’s reduced to around 40-50 and the pain has spread to include the area just above my knee.

It isn’t very swollen, it isn’t bruised, the ligaments on either side of the knee are still quite flexible.

I know the Doctors are doing something. But this is getting increasingly worse (and at an alarming rate) I need something done urgently. 6 weeks or 12 weeks from now won’t help.
I’m freaking out because my leg is becoming increasingly weak, painful and stiff and I’m scared that I’m losing the use altogether.
I would have expected the rest to ease it a little.

Does this sound like a torn cartilage?
Is there anything I can do to ease the pain?
What can I say to try and move things along?
