What is puberty all about?
Puberty is a stage of human development where the body becomes ready for sexual production. This may be a very confusing time for u since u’ll be going through some major changes in your body, but u will get through it! Puberty begins at different times for everyone, but the most common ages are between 11 to 14 for boys.
Boys – Puberty
This discusses the changes a boy’s body & mind goes through during puberty. Puberty can be a difficult period during growing up. Puberty is the process where a child’s body changes physically into an adult’s that is capable of reproduction. Boys usually start noticing changes at 12 & puberty is usually complete by the age of 17 or 18. A boy’s body goes through 6 main physical changes.
stage 1 – Testicle size, function & fertility
This is the first stage of puberty & grow from about 2 – 3 cm for about 6 years. After the boy’s testicles have grown for about 1 year, the shaft will become longer & thicker until it reaches adult proportions. You will start to have lots & lots of uncontrolled erections. They will happen at anytime, anywhere & for no reasons at all. I’t will be a very embarassing thing, but you’ll get trhough it with time. The testes produce both sperm & hormones. On average, sperm begins 2 be produced from the age of 13 but full fertility often doesn’t occur until 14 or 16. Also, the scrotum becomes longer & hangs lower as the size of the testicles increase. This is 2 make room for the increase in size & also because sperm is very sensitive 2 temperature & so needs 2 be away from the warm body.
stage 2 – Pubic hair
Pubic hair often begins 2 grow shortly after the genitals begin 2 get larger. The hair begins 2 grow on the lower abdomen & at the base of the penis. Hair also begins 2 grow on the upper thighs & up the abdomen in a line 2 the belly-button 12 to 24 years later.
stage 3 – Facial & body hair
From anywhere between a few months & a few years after the appearance of pubic hair, body & facial hair begins 2 develop. The usual order of growth is underarm, perineum (area between the scrotum & anus), upper lip, sideburns, chest & finally, chin & neck. There is a great difference between when hair begins 2 grow & how much hair each male has. Men tend 2 have much more hair as well as much thicker & darker hair than women. Facial hair becomes thicker & darker late into puberty & can continue 2 develop up to 10 years after finishing puberty.
stage 4 – Voice change
During puberty, a boy’s voice will become lower by about 1 octave. When this happens, it is referred 2 as your voice “breaking” & usually lasts for about 6 weeks. When a voice is breaking, occasionally it will squeak during speech. This is cuz your brain has not learnt 2 control the vocal folds now they r bigger. Most boys will have a full adult voice by the age of 15 & before facial hair develops.
stage 5 – Body shape
At the end of puberty, most boys will have heavier bones & about twice as much muscle. Not all areas grow at the same rate however. Shoulders tend 2 grow wider & many boys develop a larger jaw. It if often noticed that this growth can happen very quickly & is often referred 2 as a growth spurt & boys can grow up 2 an inch in height every month during this period.
stage 6 – Body odour & acne
The high hormone levels in the body during puberty is responsible for increased body odour & oily skin. This oil is what leads 2 spots & acne. This usually calms down at the end of puberty but adults can have sudden bursts of acne. In boys, this is usually the only noticeable physical change during puberty (when he is dressed) & so can be embarrassing. There r many products available from pharmacies or your doctor that can treat spots, acne & body odour.
– Mind
The hormones that prepare the body for adulthood have a big effect on the brain & when they r at such high levels, it is difficult 2 control. Boys often find themselves attracted 2 girls & r keen 2 explore their sexuality with others as well as express themselves sexually. This is totally normal & there is no need 2 worry if u find yourself “horny” a lot. There is no need 2 be ashamed of the thoughts & feelings u r having because if u don’t want 2, u don’t have 2 tell anyone.
