I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.

Are Foxy Lady palms sterile?

There is full green and mostly green. Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is. Yeah I could tell it is 100% green as well.

• Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida.
• They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable.
• Wow that looks like a lot of growth for 6 months since planting.
• It’s a bad combination for the palm to deal with root trauma and to fight full scorching sun at the same time.
• I have 2 that look just like a foxtail.

Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina.

They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years.

Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Where did that palm originate?

Foxy Lady in Trouble!

I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace. The Caryota had to be edited after it flowered; this is the nature of a garden that some plant won’t outlive us. Obviously the dark spots on the trunk remain as photographed above . Two years later and the palm is still standing but also continuing foxy gold to show the consistent tilt.
Already have an account? Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.
Also the variegation seems to be a morphological example of hybrid decline as the greens show hybrid vigor. The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias. Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies. I had about 7 seeds so I just planted them all, one popped. I have 6 mature foxy ladies and all but 2 are variegated.

I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped) Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles. Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones.
If anyone can find a pic of a small full green please post to show the difference thank you Few variegated fronds ….. There is a slight blonde strip but that why i asked is the green form Always green or does it have. Appears to be the green form. Never observed even hints of varigation on any of the solid green specimens i have seen in both FL. Now correct me if I am wrong is it true that even the green ones will spit out some variation in its life span ?

• Difficult losing palms, but the more palms you grow, over time, we lose some; that’s how it goes.
• The over variegated ones seem to languish and slowly die or just grow very slow, probably due to lack of chlorophyll.
• There are many other wonderful palms to grow where you are.
• Beautiful palm hopefully it pulls through, good luck.
• As far as I know it is possible for these two to hybridize.

I hope/expect some new batches to hit the market sometime soon. This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come.
Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time. Wow that looks like a lot of growth for 6 months since planting. I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.

The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. It PROVES that it is a true foxy lady,as foxtails are almost never variegated. I’ve got several foxtails (probably too many, but it was the first “exotic” tree that I really liked), some common King palms, and some Kentias. Foxy Lady palms are incredibly fast growing palms and I think yours has a fighting chance if you get it in the ground ASAP and keep it’s rootball watered. It never ceases to amaze me how little water rootbound palms in pots get, even if you soak them everyday.
