Selling “Whatever” Online

selling whatever online

I read this article on Yahoo yesterday, and it really, really blew my mind. It just shows what kind of opportunities are available to make money online.

Linda Katz, living in Southwest Kansas, wanted to teach herself how to design and create a webpage. This was back in 1994. To mimic real life, she “invented” a business to use as a model: selling tumbleweeds. More specifically, she created a tumbleweed “farm”. Wha?!?!?

Now, I don’t know about you, but I live in an area where we “put up with” tumbleweeds. Every fall (actually, late summer and fall, but who’s counting), we get invaded with tumbleweeds and sagebrush blown in off the prairie-desert near us. It’s annoying. They get trapped in trees, hug fences, and hide in corners where we can’t see them until it’s time for a good fall cleaning. Sometimes they hide so well they are not even discovered until after the spring thaw and the gardening tools come out.

Most of the tumbleweeds, after they are found, are “gifted” to our fine garbage collectors. The rest are probably burned, though I’m sure a few survive long enough to propagate new baby tumbleweeds to annoy us next year. Like I said, they are truly annoying.

Unless, like Linda Katz of “the Prairie Tumbleweed Farm”, you are pulling in over $40,000 per year selling the stupid things !!! I can see Hollywood buying them for movie sets, and I can even see NASA buying them to use as models for their tumbleweed-like landing modules. But as for the rest, wow. What people won’t buy.

So, start brainstorming. You might come up with that weird little item that people find useful, but can’t get locally. Expand your mind… expand your wallet.
