Bill would turn Internet providers into snoops

A bill moving through Congress would deputize your Internet service provider as a government snoop.

HR1981 would force the company you pay for Internet access to store a year’s worth of personal data and hand it over at the request of law enforcement.

The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 is geared to help police catch and prosecute people downloading or distributing child pornography. That’s a just and noble cause that, much like the clever title, no one can argue with.

Nev. bill would set regulations for Internet poker

CARSON CITY, Nev. – State lawmakers want Nevada to take the lead on regulating Internet poker, a move several legislatures are producing soon after federal efforts to regulate the multibillion-dollar marketplace fell flat at the end of last year.

Assembly members introduced a bill Thursday that calls on Nevada gambling regulators to create guidelines for Internet poker operators and corporations that make connected equipment. It prohibits the Nevada Gaming Commission from denying a license to existing poker sites such as PokerStars, which have been operating in a legal gray location following a federal law successfully banned online gambling in 2006.… Continue reading →
