compiled by the editors of HealthDay:

3D Printer Employed to Develop Woman’s New
Jaw

In a groundbreaking operation, an 83-year-previous lady received a new
lower jaw designed by a 3D printer.

The transplant was carried out in June in the Netherlands but is only now
becoming publicized. The woman went home four days immediately after the process,
BBC News reported.

Physicians decided to use this new technological innovation due to the fact they believed
reconstructive surgical procedure would be as well risky for the patient, who had
developed a persistent bone infection.

The jaw implant was made out of titanium powder that was heated and
fused with each other by laser, a single layer at a time, BBC News
reported.

This good results opens the way for the use of more 3D-printed,
patient-particular physique elements, according to technicians.

Three Cruise Ships Cleaned After Norovirus
Outbreaks

The last of three U.S.-primarily based cruise ships that have been delayed in port on

The Princess Cruise Lines‘ Ruby Princess departed Sunday from Fort
Lauderdale’s Port Everglades following undergoing decontamination following an
outbreak of norovirus, which causes upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea,
the Related Press reported.

The Crown Princess, an additional cruise ship operated by Princess Cruise
Lines, was also delayed from leaving Fort Lauderdale simply because it had to be
Quit, Study Finds

Facebook’s IPO is Quite the Status Update

As brands have become publishers and content producers, the need to manage blogs – sometimes multiple blogs for one company – has become mandatory.

The problem is, when your company has multiple blogs, managing them all can be a bear. Probably the two most popular platforms right now are WordPress and Tumblr. Though WordPress is far more robust, one of Tumblr’s key features makes it extremely attractive: A unified dashboard.

Now, WordPress does, too. WordPress expert Vladimir Prelovac (actually deserving of the expert title) has been working on ManageWP for close to two years and passed 90,000 managed sites on the platform in December.

Though Tumblr surpassed WordPress in the number of blogs hosted last year, the blogs on each platform tend to be rather different types. Of Technorati’s top 100 blogs, more than a quarter are WordPress (primarily self-hosted).

Fact is, it’s pretty ridiculous that WordPress has not developed a dashboard on its own. The nice thing about it being open source, however, is that the community – which consists of extremely talented developers and designers – has a terrific ability to create plugins like ManageWP that solve problems such as this.

Contrast this with the development of the “Missing e” application for Tumblr, which has put its developer at odds with the platform. In fact, many users of Missing e were alerted by Tumblr at the start of the year that they might stop receiving technical support from Tumblr if they continued to use the plug-in – which they refer to as a “browser hack.”

Don’t get me wrong, Tumblr is a great platform (as I’ve written before) and certainly has its place. But the ability to get the most out of your site and your platform is vital for any enterprise.

Following the freemium model so popular for web applications these days, small users with 3 or fewer sites to manage can use the plug-in for free. Up to 10 sites is $7 per month and enterprise solutions go up from there. It’s the sort of thing that Automattic, the company behind WordPress, probably should have come up with on its own.

Will a managed solution like this move WordPress back to the No. 1 spot among bloggers? Probably not. Tumblr is vastly superior when it comes to cute animal photo blogs.

But most companies don’t need blogs to post photos of cute animals. Most.

(Reuters) – World wide web giants Google Inc and Facebook removed content from some Indian domain internet sites on Monday following a court directive warning them of a crackdown “like China” if they did not take measures to protect religious sensibilities.

The two are among 21 organizations asked to build a mechanism to block objectionable material after a private petitioner took them to court above images deemed offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians.

The case has stoked fears about censorship in the world’s greatest democracy.

“(Our) critique team has looked at the content material and disabled this subject material from the neighborhood domains of search, Youtube and Blogger,” Google spokeswoman Paroma Roy Chowdhury mentioned.

At the heart of the dispute is a law that India passed final 12 months producing companies responsible for consumer material posted on their internet web sites, and providing them 36 hours to take down content material if there’s a complaint.

Final month, the organizations explained it was not achievable for them to block content material. Google’s Roy Chowdhury declined to comment on what had since been removed, and a Facebook representative stated only that the organization would release a statement later.

A decrease court in New Delhi told the firms on Monday to place in creating the actions they had taken to block offensive content, and submit reports to the court within 15 days.

Google, Facebook, Yahoo! and Microsoft have appealed in the Delhi Substantial Court against a criminal case efficiently brought by a Hindu petitioner. A civil situation against them has been brought to a decrease court by a Muslim petitioner.

“If the organizations have in fact eliminated some subject material, they ought to place in place a mechanism to do it frequently, instead of waiting for a court situation each time,” Vinay Rai, the Hindu petitioner, informed Reuters.

“Microsoft has filed an application for rejection of the suit on the grounds that it disclosed no trigger of action against Microsoft,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “The matter is sub judice and no more comments can be given.”

Fewer than one in ten of India’s 1.2 billion population has entry to the World wide web, but that even now can make it the third-most significant Web market immediately after China and the United States. The range of Web end users in India is anticipated to almost triple to 300 million more than the following 3 a long time.

In spite of the new rules to block offensive subject material, India’s Internet entry is nevertheless largely uncensored, in contrast to the tight controls in neighboring China.

Although civil rights groups have opposed the new laws, politicians say posting offensive photos in a socially conservative country, which has a historical past of violence between religious groups, presents a danger to the public.

Challenging Google in web searching sounds like an astonishing idea. Even much more, if the venture doesn’t come from a massive, aggressive and wealthy firm but from an outdated Italian University.

On Monday February 6th, this project, called Volunia, will be unveiled on the internet globally, in a conference in streaming from Padua University (at noon in Italy), not far from Venice. Much much more than an odd event, due to the fact of the title of his writer.

Now 41, Massimo Marchiori, Italian laptop or computer scientist and professor at Padua University, was awarded in 2004 with the prestigious prize TR100 by the Technology Review, magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technological innovation. He is the creator of HyperSearch algorythm, cited by Sergei Brin and Larry Page, when they introduced PageRank, valuable algorythm patented by Stanford University, at the base of Google’s success.

In the course of these a long time Marchiori refused a lot of delivers from Google and other folks top hi tech organization, just to dwell and work in Italy, he said. Often cited by the media and in public meetings as “The Italian who inspired Google”. But he never stopped pondering about the future of the net.

“Volunia is not just a a traditional search engine , not Google or other net search engine… plus 10%. It’s a new radical view of what the search engine of the future could be. An ambicious venture localized in 12 languages, covering all the contents of the world”, Marchiori explained in a short video on YouTube.

Customers can register on Volunia.com. Some of them will be chosen by Volunia staff as “Beta-Testers”, with a special feedback. These “Power Users” will get information on the up coming actions and then they will be able to invite pals to join the test.

Working with Italian servers and a particular techonological partnership to energy the bridge with US users, until right now, the venture essential an investment of two million euros, Mariano Pireddu, Volunia co-founder with each other with Marchiori was quoted as saying, by Nova Magazine of Sole 24 Ore Italian newspaper.

Introduction

Yes, it’s important to stay on top of best practices for website design and function, but it’s also vital to keep up to date with how you drive visitors to your site. With constant changes in the search world, it can seem tiresome to know how to get the most out of your search engine optimization (SEO) tactics.

Take note of the most recent SEO shifts that are crucial for marketers to know.

Google makes significant algorithm updates

Making algorithm updates is nothing new for search giant Google, but their latest update, “freshness,” will impact 35 percent of online searches. This new algorithm will ensure that recent content is at the top of search results. Google is aware that not every search query is best with the “freshness update.” For instance, a chocolate chip cookie recipe that was posted nearly ten years ago is still served as one of the top results, because of its popularity — with more than 5,000 reviews and thousands of “saves,” Google knows that this recipe is what people are looking for.

However, when searching for current events and topics, Google serves up the most recent content to those searching timely information. To witness how the “freshness” update works, observe the search results below for the newly released film, “My Week with Marilyn.” The results mimic a timeline — the top results consist of the latest content followed by more dated material.

So how does Google’s “freshness” update benefit marketers? It gives them the opportunity to place well in search results by developing relevant and creative content. The “freshness” update should encourage brands and businesses to display timely news on their website — easy ways to do this are by blogging more frequently by and posting press releases to a news page.

LONDON — Web service companies ought to do far more to avert the Internet from taking part in a part in advertising violent extremism, British lawmakers mentioned in a report published Monday.&#13

The Internet has become an essential aspect in nurturing the extremist threat, surpassing universities and prisons as a place wherever dangerous concepts are created and traded, the lawmakers stated.

“We stay concerned by the growing help for nonviolent extremism and a lot more extreme and violent types of far-right ideology,” the Residence Affairs Committee stated in its report, which follows a 9-month inquiry.

Britain has been involved in a amount of terror plots. On July seven, 2005, 4 suicide bombers killed 52 men and women in synchronized attacks on London’s transit technique. A 12 months later on, U.S. and British intelligence officials thwarted one of the largest plots however — a strategy to explode bombs on almost a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners. Last week, 4 British men fueled by the words of a U.S.-born Muslim cleric pleaded guilty to involvement in an al-Qaida inspired plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange at Christmastime.

The Property Affairs Committee mentioned the World wide web “was now one particular of the couple of unregulated spaces wherever radicalization is ready to take location” and played a higher function in promoting violence than prisons, universities or places of worship — a pointed rebuke to other government officials who had identified these places as higher chance.

“More sources need to have to be directed to these threats and to preventing radicalization through the Net and in private spaces,” stated Keith Vaz, chairman of the committee. “These are the fertile breeding grounds for terrorism.”

Lawmakers urged Web service companies to be much more energetic in monitoring the sites they host and perform with the government on producing a code of practice to eliminate any material that promotes violence extremism.

But civil liberties campaigners slammed the suggestion, saying courts — not “unaccountable officials” — ought to choose when to block online subject material.

“The level of monitoring needed to police such a scheme would indicate a significant invasion of each and every Internet user’s privacy,” mentioned Nick Pickles, director of privacy group Huge Brother Watch. “There is a serious danger that this type of censorship not only helps make the Net much less secure for law-abiding people, but drives underground the genuine threats and can make it more difficult to protect the public.”

The committee right challenged the view expressed last 12 months by Property Secretary Theresa Might, who explained that universities and prisons are among the most vulnerable places. May possibly accused universities of complacency in tackling Islamic extremism on campus, saying educators had not been taking the issue seriously.

The new report says “there is seldom concrete proof” linking the advancement of extremist views to universities.

It also warns of a threat from the far appropriate — which it stated consists mostly of “solitary, disaffected folks” — rather than organized terrorist units — and known as for greater details-sharing amongst prison bosses, the police and the UK Border Agency following the release of prisoners who have been convicted of terror offenses.

Britain’s House Workplace said it would consider the committee’s findings.

“We are operating closely with the police and Internet service providers to take World wide web detest off the Internet,” it stated in a statement.

Blogger: Kamal

Blog: Kissing Kamal: What it’s really like to be single, gay and dating.

Kissing Kamal’s blog is self-hosted on WordPress.

DC Social Media Examiner (DCSME): What is your blog about?

Kamal (K): It’s a blog about my true-life experiences being single, gay and dating in Washington, DC.

DCSME: How did you pick the topic for Kissing Kamal?

K: I’ve been on a lot of dates. At some point, I figured that I would share my dating disasters and triumphs with the world.

DCSME: How is Kissing Kamal different from other blogs that cover the same or similar information?

K: My blog is different in two ways. One is that there really aren’t a lot of blogs talking about gay relationships from the dating perspective. While I sometimes talk about sexy topics or sex as it relates to dating (e.g. monogamy), I don’t talk about actual sex. The other way that it’s different is that I present experiences in a “reality show” type format. Because everything has pretty much already happened, I can edit the dates/themes down to a few posts to make them more concise.

DCSME: What do you like most about blogging?

K: Putting something out there that people will like and hopefully find helpful in some way.

DCSME: How often do you update Kissing Kamal: What it’s really like to be single, gay and dating.?

K: Monday – Friday

DCSME: What else would you like to share with readers of your profile?

K: Something I learned from my readers: gay dating and straight dating really aren’t that different.

Kamal’s Social Media Sites:

Facebook

Twitter
