(Reuters) – The director of a video calling for the arrest of fugitive Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony suffered from a brief psychosis when he was hospitalized last week in California, the filmmaker’s wife said on Wednesday, the same day an anti-Kony resolution came before the U.S. Senate.
Jason Russell, who directed the 30-minute “Kony 2012″ Internet film that went viral earlier this month, was detained by police in San Diego last week after witnesses reported a man in “various stages of undress” who was “acting bizarrely, running into traffic” in public, police said.
“Jason’s incident was in no way… Continue reading

(Reuters) – Wal-Mart Stores Inc is adding its retail heft to Hollywood’s effort to convince U.S. consumers to buy and store movies on the Internet, as DVD and Blu-ray sales continue their downward spiral.
Starting April 16, the top U.S. retailer will offer customers at 3,500 of its stores the option to store their DVDs in digital form on Vudu — its fledgling Internet streaming site — for $ 2. That fee rises to $ 5 for high-definition versions.
Wal-Mart, traditionally one of the largest sellers of DVDs, will team up with Sony Corp, Viacom Inc‘s Paramount, Comcast… Continue reading

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Emboldened by their victory in quashing online piracy legislation, U.S. Internet companies are gearing up for a battle over whether consumers should be able to restrict efforts to gather personal data.
Google Inc, Facebook, Apple Inc and other tech companies have lobbied against congressional and federal agency proposals that would let Internet users press “do not track” buttons on their browsers to block targeted advertising. Consumers could also edit personal information that has been stored about them.
With the privacy issue, the multibillion-dollar Internet industry faces a challenge larger than potentially harmful legislation or regulations… Continue reading

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece has recalled its warship from the European Union‘s anti-piracy task force in the Indian Ocean to save money as it struggles to meet fiscal targets set by international lenders in return for a bailout package.
Greece, struggling with its worst economic crisis since World War Two, is cutting 400 million euros from the defense budget this year as it fights to stave off bankruptcy.
The frigate will return one month earlier than scheduled, on March 8 instead of April 4 and will not take part in the mission during the second half of the… Continue reading
Amazon is preparing the latest salvo in its fight to create an alternative app store to Google’s Android Market, but it’s not quite clear when the online retail giant intends to fire it.
That salvo is in-app purchases, a feature that, by all rights, would be a big addition to the features it offers in the Amazon Appstore. In-app purchases have been available to many developers through an invitation-only beta program for some time, as PocketGamer reports, but the feature hasn’t been opened up to all developers. However, the report cites unnamed sources who suggest that Amazon could be about… Continue reading
There may be a higher ratio of free apps in the Android Market than in the iTunes App Store, but the Android apps you do pay for are double the price of the average iPhone app. A new report from Canalys finds that the top 100 paid Android apps have an average price of $ 3.74 compared to $ 1.47 in Apple’s App Store. Canalys concludes that Android apps are too expensive, whereas Apple’s market is more controlled. This means Android’s high prices are the result of the attention-grabbing tactics an app maker needs to compete in a massive marketplace.… Continue reading
