A small minority still require an operator to you connect you, but these are rare. This service is generally available from almost any public payphone, resident phone, mobile phone or hotel phone in the world. It is worth bearing in mind however, if you use IDD to telephone long distance, that it could be an expensive option, and may not always be available.
Far better than one calling up people from hotels, is to ask family members and others to call up instead. This is because hotels put a high price on long distance telephone calls. Sometimes the telephone bill equals the rent of the room. A few hotels do inform their guests about calling charges in advance; many do not. It is their way of making a dual profit!
Prepaid cards are the best for long distance calls. One pays a certain value for the card purchased. The advantage is that you are absolutely sure of how much time and money you can spend on long distance telephoning and can keep a check. But the card purchased in one country can be used only in that particular country–the card cannot be transferred. There are different types of cards available–one among them is the prepaid card. Before dialing the number of the person you wish to call, you have to let the phone company know about your pin number. Any phone can be used for calling long distance with the help of a prepaid card.
A mobile user may be duped if he/she does not research the phone cards thoroughly and get acquainted with phone companies. Decide which one is most suitable for your particular place of call. If you are not careful, it is possible that you get higher charges for connections, or are charged for operator phone calls.
Credit card phones are simple variations on the basic payphone, which accept credit cards as an alternative or substitute for pre-paid cards or coins. Be careful if this is the method you choose to use to telephone long distance – credit card phones may be convenient but they rack up very high charges very quickly, beginning with the high connection charge. Unless you are desperate, they are best avoided, particularly at airports.
Unless you are a person who is frequently traveling, stay away from long distance telephoning. Compared to all other systems, the one that includes collect calling is the most expensive. Whatever the case may be, it is advisable to do some research and select the most viable and least expensive option for long distance telephoning.
