   I think you have to do both at the same time. Choose a few niches that you are knowledgable about so that you can offer unique content for that niche and then see which affiliate products are availalbe for the niches you choose. Remember with affiliates you not only have to get people to click through to the affiliate but also buy the products and services so you really have to sell the affiliate and give the user enough information so they are ready to buy when they are clicking through.

   I would suggest trying it both ways. The key isn’t in finding the niche, it is in evaluating it. Anything imaginable is a niche.
   The magic lies in finding an area in a market where profit is to be had. For example, if you are looking to build a website and aiming for organic web traffic, you will want to target keywords that get a decent amount of traffic, but does not have a lot of competition. I’ve used a pretty cool free tool that helps with finding niche markets if you are interested.

   Affiliate Marketing Steps
   1. I would go to clickbank.com worlds largest digital data bank
   2. study what are the top selling products
   3. look at gravity, tells you what is best selling product
   4. look at % of commission paid like 75% is better than 50%
   5. then set up you site based on that product
   6. you can set up free sites at squidoo.com , blogger.com, hubpages.com
   7. then social bookmark your website

   I would research products and read forums from other users and see what products/affiliates are converting well
