Consider how people talk when creating your key phrases. “CN Tower’s height” isn’t as likely to be a search query as “height of the CN Tower” or “how tall is the CN Tower”? Think what you would use to search for the content you are providing. This gets even more important when you are providing lists of information. While “five star Michelin rated restaurants in Chicago” might be a search term some people use, “best fine restaurants in Chicago” will be used by a broader audience. “Tourist attractions in Bethlehem” will be targeted only to people traveling there, while “fun things to do in Bethlehem” could be searched by locals and foreigners alike. Truly consider which key phrases will bring in the broadest audience to your website.
Always keep in mind that your customers probably don’t use the same jargon people in the business do! Even if you do sell “facial tissue”, people are going to use the term “Kleenex” to find it. Use Google’s Keyword Tool to determine if the phrase you would use yourself is actually what customers are using. While you may call the service you offer a “home loan”, searchers are going to be looking for a “mortgage”. Don’t be afraid to focus on slang either: “hoodie” will always be more popular than “hooded sweatshirt”, for instance.
